トレンドだった「ビートルズ嫌い」
先日、池袋のライフハウス（？）FREE FLOW RANCH で、マスター 深田氏と、日経BP「大人のロック」の話をしてました。たまたま、FREE FLOW RANCHが「大人のロックVol.4」の「ロック酒場」で紹介されたからです。
そのときは、出版社に勤めるK氏も一緒だったのですが、私はこの「大人のロック」というのは非常にイイ線を狙った企画だと創刊時から感じていたことを話しました。現在40～50代のロックファンというのは、自分の周囲での実感としても結構多く、こうした「大人のロックファン」をターゲットとする雑誌やムックは、マーケティング的にもかなり成功する可能性が高いと思うわけです。この「大人のロック」の発行部数、実売数はどの程度なのか知りませんが、少なくともVol.4まで発行されているのですから、そこそこの販売実績は挙げているのでしょう。
でもこのムック、かなり筋金入りのロックファンである私は、Vol.1こそ書店で見掛けて即購入しましたが、Vol.2以降は購入していません。書店店頭で立ち読みするだけです。理由は簡単で、取り上げているミュージシャンが私の趣味に合わないからです。
日系BPのサイトで各号の表紙を見てもらえば判る通り、大きく取り上げられているのはストーンズ、ビートルズ、クランプトン、クィーン、ツェッペリン、イーグルス…等々で、あとはせいぜいピンク・フロイド、ELPあたりまでと、なんだか「日本のマーケットで成功したステレオタイプなメジャーバンド」ばかりです。ま、Vol.3の表紙に小さく「ユーライアヒープ」の名が見えるなど、本文ではデュアン・オールマンやドクター・ジョンなど渋めのミュージシャンも紹介されてはいますが、あくまで「オマケ」。特にストーンズ、ビートルズ、クランプトン、クィーンあたりは毎号くどいほど特集されている。これがつまらないわけです。私はビートルズは嫌い、ストーンズは嫌いではないが別に大ファンでもない、ツェッペリンは好きだけど熱狂するほどでもない、クィーンやイーグルスはどうでもいい…という人ですから、こうまでステレオタイプにストーンズ、ビートルズばかりが大きく取り上げられると、なんだか「中年ロックファンを舐めるな（笑）」という気になってきちゃいます。どうも、私の世代でロックが好き…というと、最低でもストーンズ、ビートルズ好きというイメージが出来上がってるみたいですね。
そりゃわかりますよ、ストーンズ、ビートルズこそ「ロック」であり「青春の音楽」だと思っている中年が現実に多いことは…。そして、マーケティング的にはこうした層をターゲットにしなきゃ売れないことも…。まあ、オールマン・ブラザース・バンドやグレイトフル・デッド、CCN＆Yやザ・バンド、そしてCCRあたりの名をでかでかと表紙に印刷して大特集を組んでも、あまり売れないでしょうから。
でも…ですね、せっかく「大人のロック」…というマーケットを狙うのであれば、「商業ロック」の象徴でもあったビートルズやストーンズが嫌い…と主張することこそがトレンドであった、1970年代当時の「ある種の風潮」をも念頭に置いた企画がもっと欲しい。あ、オールマン・ブラザース・バンドやグレイトフル・デッドなんてのは確かに私の個人的趣味です。むろんビートルズ嫌いで、プログレッシブ・ファンでもいいし、NYパンクのファンでもいいけど、ともかく「アンチビートルズ」は、ロックの世界でマーケティングをする上ではかなり重要なキーワードのはずです。
妙な話なんですが、1960年代後半から1970年代にかけては、「ビートルズ嫌い」こそがロック好きの証…という側面が、確実にあります。私のビートルズ嫌いなんて、ある意味でトレンドに流されやすかったから…だけかもしれません。
そうなんです、この「大人のロック」というムック、少なくとも私の周囲には「ビートルズ特集ばかりやってるから買わない」…という中年ロックファンがたくさんいるのです。このムック、せっかくいい企画なのに惜しいなぁ…
